Project Movie Nights

October 3rd-7th, 2022

The Professional Development avenue collaborated with Jindal Institute of Behavioral Science and Centre for Community Mental Health to conduct movie screenings for five days at the Performing Arts Avenue, O.P. Jindal Global University for the students of the university. The central theme of the movies revolved around “ Mental health ailments” from 3rd to 7th October, 2022. The following movies were screened- What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Joker, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, To the bone and Shutter Island. Each movie screening was followed by a discussion on the characters and events from the story that centred around the concepts imperative to create community which takes mental health of each member seriously and in an empathetic manner.

The movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape led to a discussion revolved around how the movie paid homage to the difficulties that a caregiver’s burden brings upon a person. Gilbert, one of the main characters  in the movie learns on how to deal with their emotions spreading the same message for the masses. The second story Joker talked about the victimisation of people who struggle with mental health, and the social structure that doesn’t help the marginalised. We quickly went from the moral conundrums of the criminally insane, like Joker, to the responsibility of educated citizens i.e. to be empathetic towards all humans.

Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, the movie revolves around the subtleties of trauma and how these even repressed traumas can manifest themselves in our long term relationships. Memories exists in structural forms in our consciousness and thus can be tinkered with. The question this movie raised was whether our subconscious can ever forget things and led to an eventful conversation among peers. To the bone is an extremely interesting and realistic movie which shed light on the topic of eating disorders which is a hard one to grasp. We heard some really empathetic voices who went on to discuss the etiology of the disorder and how society plays a big role in the rising numbers of eating disorders around us.
